Print Details

All framed prints are mounted and include mats signed by the artist, and prints that are 8” by 12” and larger include provenance information such as print number and shooting date on the back of each piece. These prints are built to look their best for a very long time. Color prints are archival inkjet prints with an archival rating of 165 years using UV glass. Black-and-white prints are either silver gelatin prints with an archival rating of 250 years or digital prints using pigment-based inks with an archival rating of 218 years.

Matting, Frames and Glass

Large framed prints are professionally mounted, matted and framed using archival methods and materials. All matting materials are acid-free, and white overmats are eight-ply thick (most photographers use thinner four-ply mats). I prefer the extra thickness of an 8-ply mat because it adds a dimension of solidity and dignity and provides an impressive window for the printed image.

The larger framed pieces use classic black metal frames with squared edges and a matt finish. I like the elegant simplicity of a sleek black metal frame because they complement without distracting from the photographic image and manage to look both classic and contemporary. Metal frames are also stronger than wood, which becomes important when artwork is under glass and of moderate or large size.

Framed prints typically use ultra-violet (UV) filtering art glass to protect against fading and color distortion resulting from exposure of the print to light.

Photographs printed on aluminum are also an option.

Preserving Fine Art Photography

In addition to using archival materials and UV glass, the other keys to preserving the quality of framed photographic prints are to avoid smoke, extreme temperatures, bright sunlight and moisture.
